Why We Built bankruptcy.ai as a Front-End Layer First

The case for sequencing intake and document collection before in-platform drafting — and why firms should not have to rip and replace anything that is already working.

The most common question we get from attorneys evaluating the platform is some version of: "So this replaces my petition software?" The answer is no — and understanding why we made that choice tells you a lot about how we think about building software for practitioners.

Where the actual friction is

When we started mapping the bankruptcy practice workflow from end to end, the friction was concentrated in two places: the front end (getting information from the client into a usable form) and the back end (delivering documents to the trustee and managing post-filing communication). The petition platform handled the middle part — schedule assembly, form generation, e-filing — competently.

Most attorneys we talked to did not have a petition software problem. They had an intake problem. They had a document-chasing problem. They had a 341 prep problem. Building a replacement for their petition platform would have solved nothing they were actually complaining about — and asked them to absorb significant switching cost in the process.

The sequencing decision

We decided to build the front-end layer first: a system that gathers information from the client, collects and organizes documents from source integrations, validates completeness, and exports a clean data package to whatever petition software the firm already runs. The export is schema-validated so it lands without manual fixup.

Drafting and e-filing will come. That is explicitly on our roadmap. But we are building it incrementally — starting with where the pain actually is and earning the right to expand scope by delivering value at each stage.

Why this matters for firms evaluating the platform

You do not have to change your petition platform. You do not have to retrain your attorneys on a new drafting system. You plug in the front-end layer, your intake gets faster, your documents arrive from the source instead of from the client's camera roll, and your 341 packages assemble themselves. The attorneys keep working in the system they know.

That is the pitch. It is incremental by design.
